The Choctaw Nation is a federally recognized American Indian tribe of Muskogean linguistic stock whose historic homeland spanned much of central and southern Mississippi as well as parts of eastern Louisiana and western Alabama. They are known as fierce warriors, excellent farmers and skillful traders. The tribe is a member of the Five Civilized Tribes and their motto is “Living out the Chahta Spirit of faith, family and culture.”
The Choctaw first came together as a people sometime between the mid-sixteenth century and the late seventeenth century. Their ancestral home covered the Southeastern United States and included more than 23 million acres. Their tribal land in Mississippi now covers approximately 4,000 square miles.
Like most Native Americans, the Choctaw were primarily farmers and made use of corn as their main crop. Other crops such as beans, squash, melons and peas were also cultivated. They lived in villages consisting of houses and small cornfields. Their homes were built with plaster and rivercane walls and thatched roofs, similar to log cabins. They were comfortable and warm, but not as strong and secure as modern homes.
By the early nineteenth century, the Choctaw had mastered agricultural skills and were developing a diversified economy. They began to export goods to other Native American tribes and to white settlers. The Choctaw also established a number of small trading posts to sell their products and to exchange other goods with other tribes.
In 1831, the US government removed the majority of Choctaw to Oklahoma in what is called the Trail of Tears. The Choctaw who remained in Mississippi formed the Mississippi Band of Choctaw and are still considered one of the Five Civilized Tribes. The tribe’s vision is to “Build a vibrant and thriving community by offering opportunities for growth and prosperity.”
